Ideas for writing

picture of baby for holiday newsletter

To get started, think about who will be reading your holiday newsletter. What would your friends or distant family members most like to hear about?

Good topics include:

  • Job changes or promotions
  • Births or adoptions
  • New pets
  • Engagements, weddings, or anniversaries
  • Moving to a new home
  • Family vacations or summer camps the kids attended
  • Anecdotes or funny stories that happened during the year

Once you’ve decided on what to write about, pick a theme and compose a catchy headline to draw people in.

Write an appealing letter

snowflake holiday newsletter

As you follow these tips, keep in mind that the goal is to spread holiday cheer:

  • Keep the tone casual.
  • Write about your feelings or experiences instead of just stating the facts.
  • Keep it light. Concentrate on the good things that happened to you and your family. It’s OK to briefly mention sad events, but don’t focus on them.
  • Use humor. You could even tell a joke or two.
  • Consider describing how thankful you are to friends and family for the support they provided for you throughout the year.
  • Keep descriptions short and sweet. When you read through each paragraph, ask yourself “Would I find this interesting if it was sent to me?

One page is the ideal length. It’s better to choose a handful of events to talk about rather than trying to fit an entire year’s worth into the newsletter.

Go beyond the ordinary

favorite family recipe card

Consider adding the following to your newsletter:

  • Favorite family recipes—or new ones that you know your friends and family will love. Print some customized recipe cards yourself with free HP Activity Center recipe card templates
  • Tidbits and trivia about the holidays and/or holiday customs. Brain Candy Holidays is a good source of trivia.
  • Short facts about your family history or genealogy
  • Puzzles, word searches, and other games built around a holiday theme
  • Christmas carol lyrics
  • Jokes and riddles
  • Create a family/friends trivia contest and offer a fun prize for the reader who wins it. The prize could be a gift certificate or family photo—something simple and easy to mail.

Add photos

Pictures add pizzazz and visual interest to your newsletter, and they’re great for breaking up blocks of text.

Set the stage for your newsletter by including a photo of your family together. And if there were any big milestones during the year, include photos that capture those moments, too. Or you could pick a few favorite shots from the year and create a mini photo collage.

Write creative photo captions

It doesn't take long to generate attention-getting captions—and they really add to the entertainment value of your newsletter!

Instead of captions like "Graduation 2006" or "Greg's Birthday party,” try using captions that reflect your photo subject's personality.

For instance, what's a better caption for this picture:

“Winter vacation 2007” or  “WIPEOUT!”

Not every picture needs a funny line, of course—shoot for a blend of humorous and descriptive captions.

Add clip art

Jazz up your newsletter with a few pieces of clip art. Free clip art is plentiful, but Microsoft offers a collection that’s worth exploring. Just go to Microsoft's Clip Art and Media page or, if you’re online and using Microsoft Word, click Insert > Picture > Clip Art > Clip art on Office Online.

Select attractive paper

HP brochure and flyer paper works well for holiday newsletters

Pick the right paper for the job. A heavier stock will last longer and is the best choice for showing off your photos.

For the best look and feel, choose one of the following:

  • HP Premium Inkjet Paper: This paper is whiter and brighter to create a striking contrast with colorful text, photographs, and scanned images.
  • HP Glossy Brochure & Flyer Paper: Thicker than plain paper, this luxurious, glossy paper offers the best possible inkjet print quality for text and excellent image quality for photos and graphics.

Shop for photo paper online at the Home and Home Office store.
