Your scanner offers a fast and easy way to get your photos on your computer. But it’s more than that. It’s also a powerful imaging tool that can help you create projects, get artistic, and become more productive. Discover the many creative possibilities of using a scanner.

Make magic

What other kinds of photo projects can you create with your scanner? Practically any! Try these ideas for using your scanner in new and unusual ways. But don’t stop there. Invent your own creative crafts!

  • Create a genealogy. Make a scrapbook or web page of your family’s history. Start by scanning old photos, letters, and heirlooms from your stash of keepsakes. Scan historical documents such as birth announcements and marriage certificates, and then create a collage. That photo of Uncle Clayton would look great against a map of his homestead…and don’t forget to include a scan of the gold watch he always wore.
  • Invent your own reality. Scan photos of family members, even though they’re scattered around the world, and make a virtual reunion. Create a collage, or if you’re feeling confident in your image-editing skills, you can use your HP scanner software to insert people in the same picture as though they’ve always been there. Imagine your dad shaking hands with President Carter, Elvis at your wedding, or UFOs in the backyard! You can also remove red-eye and blemishes from photos.
  • Throw a surprise party. Amaze your friends and family with cards and decorations featuring scanned pictures of the guest of honor. Can’t you just see the look on your best friend’s face when she walks in and sees her picture on banners and decorations, or as an iron-on design on every T-shirt? Now that’s a surprise.
  • Write it down. Keeping a journal is an ideal way to chronicle your life, celebrate special events, or commemorate projects and hobbies. Scan special photos to include your blooming garden, Grandpa’s birthday party, and the new puppy. The sky’s the limit! HP features a variety of journal projects, including a garden journal  to get you started.
  • Make something larger than life. Your five-year-old blowing out his birthday candles…your puppy’s first walk in the park…the look on Grandma’s face when she sees her grandkids. Creating poster-size pictures of the special moments in life is a great way to commemorate them. Many HP scanners feature Panorama Maker software, which “stitches” together smaller pieces of photos to create a poster. Then you can print your creation on a single page, multiple pages, or banner paper. Read about the HP Scanjet 4670, which includes this feature, to learn more.
  • Explore the world of texture. You can use interesting textures for almost anything. Scan canvas, leather, or other textiles to create interesting background patterns for photo album pages. Your favorite sweater can take on a whole new life as the background pattern on your latest scrapbook!
  • Share and share alike. HP scanners come with HP Instant Share , an innovative feature that allows you to instantly share your favorite photos with friends and family. So, if your friend overseas or relatives in the next state want pictures of this morning’s birthday party, it’s a snap!

Boost your productivity

Using your scanner in innovative ways isn’t just about fun ways to get creative. You can also save time, hassle, and money.

  • Scan photos for holiday (or “just because”) newsletters for friends and family. Nothing will delight Grandma more than a picture of the kids along with updates of the latest happenings. And it will save you money, too (not to mention multiple trips to the store to buy greeting cards).
  • Make an electronic inventory of important pictures in your home. Scan photos of heirlooms (and note their appraisals), capture irreplaceable baby pictures, and more. With the software, you can then easily sort them for quick reference.
  • You know that pile of negatives and slides that’s gathering dust in the closet? Scan them all using a transparency adapter to make an archive of your photos. Use software to organize your pictures and create a slideshow.
  • Scanners are also perfect for work. Capture your business logo and important pictures to use in promotional flyers, business cards, web sites, and newsletters.
